Water hammer absorbers can also have environmental benefits by reducing water wastage. Pipe bursts caused by water hammer can lead to significant water losses, which can be mitigated by the use of absorbers.
Water hammer absorbers, also known as surge tanks or expansion tanks, are devices used to control the sudden increase in pressure that occurs in a piping system when there is a rapid change in the flow rate of water. This phenomenon, known as water hammer, can cause damage to pipes, VALVES, and other components of the system.
A separation airbag similar to a diaphragm is installed in the pressure housing of the Water Hammer Absorber. The inert gas (nitrogen) at the pressure of P0 rushes into the airbag through the intake valve until the airbag expands and fills the entire internal space of the water hammer absorber with volume V0. When the circulating pressure P1 is greater than the preset pressure P0 of the gas, the Hydraulic Valve at the bottom opens, and the airbag is compressed to V1 due to the external circulating pressure. If the pressure of the liquid increases to P2, the volume of the gas decreases to V2, and the pressure rises accordingly, thereby balancing the pressure of the liquid. That is to say, the airbag inside the water hammer absorber has been compressed, and the volume change is ΔV=V1 -V2. The energy it stores can be used where we need it.
